Basics of Blogging

A blog, also called a website, is an online discussion or informational site published on the Internet, usually consisting of relatively informal, sometimes diary-style, textual entries. Blog posts are usually published in reverse chronological order. In most cases, you can read the blog by typing in the topic into a search engine such as Google or Yahoo and then clicking on the appropriate “blog” button.

Blogging is similar to journaling. Although some bloggers focus only on their personal experiences, others make use of their blogs as platforms to share information, news or opinions about any topic they choose. The basic idea behind a blog is to communicate with your audience in a casual, conversational way. This allows you to develop a relationship with your readers and develop a connection, whether personal or professional, with them.

Blogs have been around for quite some time. It was actually Milton Glaser who popularized the term “blogging” in a 1986 book, “How to Make a Living Online”. Today, blogs are used for a number of purposes, such as personal development, business, and public relations. Some bloggers even use their blogs to market their business, services, or products!

As mentioned, blogs are similar to personal experience journals. In most cases, you can read a blog through the eyes of the blogger, i.e. you can observe what is going on in the blogger’s head. The purpose of a blog, in a nutshell, is to give information that can be useful to readers. However, as mentioned, the blog is usually not considered a serious research tool, but more like a “talk” board where one can interact with his or her fellow blog readers.

There are several different types of blogging on the Internet today. First of all, there are free sites. These blogs are usually a bit messy, but it is still possible to find them and participate in them. Some free blogs, such as the WordPress blog, are user-friendly. Some free sites provide a large archive of articles for the blog user to peruse. Other free sites are more focused on providing links to related content on other websites. While these free sites are great, they do require the blogger to be patient and work through the numerous articles.

Paid blogs, on the other hand, are usually a lot more organized, have more information, and may require a subscription. Some of these sites charge monthly or annual fees, while others are free and offer no fee at all. Although these blogs are not very user-friendly, the fee is generally well worth it considering the extensive information available. If you are looking for a more professional style of blogging, you may want to go with paid blogs.
